W/C 27th March 2023 – Have an eggcellent Easter!

So our last week of the Spring Term, what did we get up to as we headed towards a 2-week Easter break?

Visits from the Police, selfies, bike riding, ghost hunting, birthday celebrations, cooking, climbing, community service, education trips, go karting, reading, researching, resin work, going to the gym, photography, football, mechanics, painting, plumbing, English, maths and of course an Easter Egg Hunt!

So lets get started…..

A visit from the Police! Don’t worry our little ones were not in trouble!, they were learning about all the important work the Police do for us and our community. Of course it was also fun trying on their uniforms! Can we see a future Police Officer in the making from Pushforward?….

Drone flying and photography this week, also including a fun selfie on the top of a bus!

Do you believe in Ghosts? We went on walks searching this week….from ghostly medieval monks to the infamous Grey Lady, this historical town offers chills and thrills galore. Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk is known as one of the most haunted towns in England!

Over in cooking this week we had young people praying their chocolate cake would work – and oh doesn’t it look amazing!

Traditional Easter cornflake/egg cakes

….and homemade lasagna (with homemade pasta) – which apparently involved making a lot of mess, and every utensil in the place being used!

Kids are quite intuitive by nature, and they love to experiment with new things. Learning how to make electronic circuits and use magnetic building blocks. This helps to turn their thoughts into reality, to exercise their fine and gross motor skills. Using smaller movements to connect the pieces, which strengthens eye-hand coordination and fine motor skills.

Maths & English does not need to be done sat at a desk if the young person can’t do that – we can do Maths and English through so many other subjects and activities – learning without realising it, like a subtle game of cards!

Climbing, hanging and sliding. Fitness, co-ordination, overcoming fears and most of all having fun!

Climbing helps improve spatial and directional awareness, and also boosts physical skills such as balance, hand and foot coordination, and agility.

Over in Newmarket 2 we have been practicing with bricklaying and getting the plumbing area ready.

Whether looking for frogs at the local lake, playing football, playing ‘sally up, sally down, go karting, or just playing nicely with your friends. Learning to play as a team, working with others or sharing with friends are important life skills.

Playing with others allows children to learn to regulate their emotions, develop social skills and form a sense of identity. Learning to share with others teaches children about compromise and fairness.

Newmarket 1 is coming along nicely. The ramps are finally in – so work can really get started on the MX5 project.

Educational Visits are a great way to learn whilst having fun, out and about. This week we visited the Food Museum, formerly the Museum of East Anglian Life in Stowmarket, Suffolk, England. Specialising in presenting the agricultural history of East Anglia through a mixture of exhibits and living history demonstrations.

A little vegetable painting this week for our young people, a fun way of expressing their creativity. Whole or cut surfaces of different vegetables exhibit interesting patterns.

Who says you can’t have a sleep over in the middle of the day!

In Carpentry we were busy working on owl boxes and making a beautiful resin river charcuterie board stained and fitted with carrying handles.

Can you remember your first day at school? You were probably really nervous. For some young people it’s more than that, it can be truly terrifying. For one of our young people they made an awesome confidence leap this week by staying all day at Pushforward for the first time since November and had fun!….Well done we are super proud of you.

Playing an adjective game and making an adjective monster.

Learning adjectives and their correct usage enables kids to articulate their thoughts and feelings in a more descriptive and complete way.

The week would not be complete without a little Easter Egg hunt!

Lastly our week saw some of our young people take part in some Community Projects, from clearing rubbish outside Moreton Hall Youth Centre to clearing a new cafe/kitchen area in Newmarket. It’s great for young people to learn about giving back to their local community – providing a sense of connection, providing new skills and valuable work experience.

Watch this space for more Community work Pushforward like to get involved with.

Our Ethos

No one can begin to affect the world around them until they are CONFIDENT , COMFORTABLE, happy in their own skin and have found their SPARK! We take the time to understand and develop programmes from where the learner is in the world not where we think they should be.
