W/C 5th December 2022 – Suffolk Outside & Inside

When one of our young people are being shown photography skills and come up with an image like this – wow, how beautiful. Photography is a great creative, artistic skill to learn. Not just taking the photo’s but the editing. Learning about light. Shadow. Reflection. Colours. SO that even on a miserable UK day – you can achieve beautiful pictures like this.

And from the sky we can see a whole new world open up to our young people.

Little Dudes enjoying being outside.

Whether its enjoying being outside, playing in the leaves, playing a game of golf, photography, playing with your beloved pet or creating dens. Being outside is so therapeutic for our young people. Fresh air, colours, exercise, fun, learning about your environment and different birds, learning outside the classroom.

Cooking can be healthy. From fresh herbs and meat. It can also be fun, especially at Christmas time. With cheese straws, Christmas tree Nutella twists, Christmas tree pizza dough twists and of course for those of us with a sweet tooth a little chocolate Rice Krispies treat. Probably the hardest sessions our team have to take part in – all those lovely smells and all that great food to eat – expanding waistbands may be needed soon!

Part of the work with our young people is looking at their future careers. Some of our young people want to be carpenters or bricklayers or hairdressers so we do our best to accommodate their interest and let them experience their chosen career with hands on learning. In Newmarket we are able to provide hands on learning in all areas of Construction. This week we had carpentry:

Some want a different type of career. This young man would like to join the Army – so this week he has been researching his options for his future. Finding out fitness is a big part of this career choice he has also been enjoying structured sessions of PT in the local gym.

We specialise in learning through fun – these young people are, through play, demonstrating some brilliant find motor skills by threading beads, using magnetic boards for letters, using phonics knowledge and then sounding them out and practicing their spellings.

Over in Newmarket this week we have been finishing off our exciting bench project – watch this space for the finished article!

We have also been doing some welding and carvings. What is not obvious from these photos is some of the challenges our young people face just doing these simple tasks – sensitive hearing has hindered this young person from pursing their dream to be a welder. Finding ways of overcoming a fear has been our teams goal and how super proud are we at the achievement this week!

The first bus was probably a large, steam-driven stagecoach that operated in England in 1830. The early vehicle was called an omnibus, a Latin word meaning “for all,” later abbreviated to bus. In 1895 an eight-passenger bus powered by a four- to six-horsepower, single-cylinder engine was built in Germany.

Bus spotting is the interest and activity of watching, photographing and tracking buses throughout their working service lives within bus companies. A person who engages in these activities is known as a bus spotter, bus fan, bus nut or bus enthusiast. This young man is certainly one of those who knows everything there is to know – better than sitting looking at a screen all day!

This week our young people have been getting ready for Christmas and making Crafts at Ickworth House.

They have also been learning Roman history and building a trebuchet.

Why does writing have to be done on paper! – much more fun using glitter! We also made a snow globe with a rainbow snowman and LOTS of glitter!

Research has shown that listening to music can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain as well as improve sleep quality, mood, mental alertness, and memory. Most of our young people love getting into the music studio and jamming.

Here another young person created their own music – a Christmas track:

Trips out are so important to our young people. Learning to socialise, taking time to relax and visiting museums for a wealth of fun learning. This week one of our trips was to Moyses Hall Museum. Think the cage was a highlight for one of our young people!

Don’t worry know one was arrested this week! Just a friendly visit from the police, helping our young people learn about what the Police do for our community. Of course having a sit in the Police Car and back of the Van had to be done!

All our young people make us proud overcoming the challenges they face. But when a young person goes above and beyond we love to celebrate with a certificate – this young man did exactly that – showing us how grown up and calm he could be when faced with a challenge. Well Done!

Our Ethos

No one can begin to affect the world around them until they are CONFIDENT , COMFORTABLE, happy in their own skin and have found their SPARK! We take the time to understand and develop programmes from where the learner is in the world not where we think they should be.
